San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc. (Hospital) spearheaded by the Breastfeeding /Lactation Team joined the World Breastfeeding Week Celebration last August 1 - 7, 2015. The hospital being a Mother & Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and Lactation in the Workplace accredited, adopted the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action's (WABA) theme, "Breastfeeding and Work: Let's Make it Work".

The objectives of the hospital in this celebration are:

1. Engage employees from different divisions to actively participate in supporting employed women to continue breastfeeding
2. Raise awareness on the latest global and local legislations related to maternity protection and its current implementation in the workplace
3. Strengthen and showcase supportive practices that enable working mothers to breastfeed
4. Advocate in practicing the breastfeeding rights of women in the workplace
5. Promote the core values of Social commitment in helping the women in the informal sector how and when to breastfeed.

In response to the Department of Health (DOH) challenge and with the support of the Hospital Management, different activities were held and participated in by hospital employees as follows:

August 3, 2015 - a lecture was conducted at the Out Patient Unit as part of Public Education and Awareness Program for expectant mothers and Postpartum counseling

August 3-4, 2015- Selected members of the Team attended the 1st International and 3rd National Breastfeeding Congress at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas

August 5, 2015- the team participated in the Milk- Letting Activities of the Department of Health in coordination with the Pasay City Health Office at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Breastfeeding Quiz Bee with a twist "BFB TWIST" highlighted the event last August 6, 2015. This quiz bee was done to determine the employees' awareness on Breastfeeding. Three representatives were sent by each division with the following winners:

Certificate of appreciation was given to all the participating divisions and winners with their certificates and simple token during the Flagrites/Quality Circle last August 10, 2015.

Pregnant employees were also provided Breastfeeding Education Information on the same day.

The Breast Feeding Team would like to express their gratitude to SJDEFI Administration and to all employees who took part in the activities. Let us all continue supporting the breastfeeding advocacy of the hospital.

In consonance with the Department of Health ( DOH) calendar of activities for 2015, the Dietary Section spearheaded the Nutrition Month celebration with the theme: "Timbang Iwasto sa tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo". This was in collaboration with the Hospital's Health Unit and Corporate Affairs Office.

The different activities brought efforts in highlighting the importance of health and wellness of the hospital employees and as part of the Hospital's health advocacy, this was extended to the hospital customers.

As a Dietitian, I believe that a change in mindset when it comes to proper nutrition and physical activities is the key in improving the lives and productivity of the employees, especially, nowadays that lifestyle diseases like Obesity, Diabetes and Hypertension are rapidly increasing.

The following programs were successfully executed:

• Nutrition Counselling
• Wellness Caravan
• Weight Management Lecture
• Zumba
• Aerobics Exercise

The active participation of the employees in the various activities showed that slowly, we have touched their mind and heart to shift to a healthy lifestyle as we work together towards the goal of decreasing "lifestyle" diseases among employees, especially through the Health Awareness Programs of the Hospital.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is one the leading causes of fatality in the Philippines and abroad. Treatment for this ailment, like hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant, can pose psychosocial, emotional and financial implications to individuals and their families.

Last June 2015, San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation Inc. (SJDEFI) - Hospital celebrated Kidney Month following the national theme "Batong Inaalagaan, Habangbuhay Nating Kayamanan". The Hospital created a program that aimed to strengthen awareness of the employees and its neighboring communities about renal health and renal disease prevention.

The Hospital conducted a lay forum to our outpatients focusing on the preventive strategies of acquiring renal illnesses. An engaging health lecture on caring for the kidneys was also facilitated by Dr. Janice Garcia, a Nephrologist Consultant, to all healthcare providers. As part of the initiatives for renal health promotion, SJDEFI - Hospital granted Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine screening at a discounted price for ten (10) outpatient chosen beneficiaries.

As mentioned in the national theme: health is a treasure if it will be properly taken care of. Lifestyle modification and partnership with your trusted health care personnel are the most economical and practical measures in renal health promotion. Hence, the only key to curb Chronic Kidney Disease is nothing but prevention.

The SJDEFI Medical Staff held its 37th Annual Medical Staff Meeting last June 28, 2015 at Diamond Hotel, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. The Medical Staff with their busy schedules took time out to attend the said affair, showing their commitment and living up to one of their responsibilities as a member of the SJDEFI Medical Staff.

As spearheaded by the Medical Director, Dra. Mirla M. Severino together with the Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Camilo Roa, the Medical Staff Meeting was held successfully with the holding first of the Holy Mass at the Hospital chapel.

The event was an opportunity to introduce formally to the Medical Staff, the new Vice-President for Health Services, Sister Ma. Linda R. Monzon, D.C.

The Hospital's Top Management and the Directors of the different divisions were also present to grace the occasion.

Dra. Severino presented the highlights and achievements of the Medical Division and the new services and equipment the Hospital is on the process of acquiring. She thanked the doctors for doing their share in the improvement of the hospital services. The Hospital is maximizing its resources, available opportunities and assured the Medical Staff that the Hospital Administration is recognizing everybody's needs.

A short lecture on "Maximizing Outcomes in Anti-Microbial Therapy for Nosocomial Pneumonia" was presented by no less than, Dr. Camilo Roa, adding to the clinical knowledge of the doctors.

A "Surprise Feature" was innovated for this year by giving the Outstanding Chairman's Award to former Chairman who contributed a lot their department and gained national/international awards to bring honor to the institution. The following are the recipients of the Award:

The affair also gave again an opportunity for the physicians to bond with their colleagues and got acquainted with the new medical staff.

The Medical Staff Organization (MSO) of 2014-2015 headed by Dra. Aurora Veluz, as President rendered the MSO's accomplishments during their term.

The meeting was concluded with the Oath-taking of the new set of officers of the Medical Staff Organization for 2015-2016.

Once again, congratulations to all the SJDEFI Medical Staff.

The idea of leading through service may be attributed more than hundred years ago in the time of Lao Tzu who has proven enough in the field of philosophy. This was soon magnified by different authors including Chanakya and was reflected in the bible through the words of Mark.

Robert K. Greenleaf, however, gave birth to such term as "servant leadership" and presented a more concise description of the phrase. According to him, it is all about the feeling of wanting to serve first before leading, which if carefully analyzed makes a lot of sense, since one may not be considered a servant leader if he has not felt how it is to serve others.

It is undeniable that today, the society is more empowered with leaders, who have the power and the autonomy to make a difference in the present world. But is having power enough to actually create something spectacular or at least something good? For years and years now, the Philippines has had its fair share of political scams and anomalies caused by the people who term themselves as "servant leaders." Although it is hard to admit, dirty politics has been causing more pain to the people than ever and many are wondering whether good governance still holds a spot in the country we are living in.

In this light, the political leaders of the country should probably reflect on this one question, "Am I doing this for the people or for myself?"

Servant Leadership comes with the honest commitment to serve and ultimately, the ethical use of power. Perhaps, everything commences with the kind of motive he has under the power that he holds. A good motive goes hand-in-hand with a moral obligation to righteously work for the benefit of the majority and not of himself. It is a lifelong journey that means this type of leadership has no expiration, simply because - it is an inner desire.

As part of the continual improvement of hospital facilities, and through the combined effort of our management and staff, the Critical Care Unit B (CCUB) formerly known as Special Care Unit (SCU) returns to its original location last November 13, 2014. The re-opening of CCUB started with the ribbon cutting by Sister Normita Guevara D.C., VP for Health Services, followed by a blessing ceremony held by Fr. Jun Nocomora, the SJDEFI-Hospital Chaplain. The renovation highlighted on several changes. First was the use of LED lighting to minimize the electrical consumption, use of metal rather than wood to avoid or eliminate termites nesting place, rehabilitation of medical gas outlets, control and piping system to align with the hospital standard and change in the ambiance that makes the area looks more spacious and well - lighted because of the color and design. At the same time all rooms are now ready for hemodialysis procedure since they had already designed Reverse Osmosis (RO) system of pipes for the supply and discharge of water. Thus, the continued renovation and improvement of the hospital not only helps for the aesthetic view but for us health workers to feel comfortable in providing quality care and service for our customers. We will be expecting more renovation and construction so watch out.

One of the dynamic programs of the Nursing Service Division in San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation Inc. (Hospital) is the establishment of the Research Committee since 2007. The group was founded by Dr. Rodolfo C. Borromeo and is continuously conducting researches within the premises of the hospital, that is primarily focused on quality improvement within the scope of nursing practice. It aims to produce evidence-based researches that will present new knowledge and methods in nursing practices that will be applied in the hospital system.

The year 2014 has opened up with a new vision for the research committee with the presence of new members. The concept of the committee research agenda is in line with the Unified Health Care Research Agenda by the Philippine National Health Research System. Currently, studies made are focused on patient safety and quality improvement processes. The succeeding years will have researches focusing on Clinical Nursing Leadership, Collaborative Care Management, Education and Staff Development.

SJDEFI (Hospital) is now a duly acknowledged Research Cell of the Philippine Nursing Research Society, Inc (PNRSI) and is the 1st hospital-based research society among the other 14 academic-based institutions throughout the Philippines. The PNRSI is a recognized organization of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) with the aim of improving the nursing practices in the country by allowing nurse researchers to conduct nursing researches and to be presented in established forums. A Research Cell has to conform to the goals and activities of the PNRSI and is granted an opportunity to be a part of the National Nursing Research Conference (NNRC). Cell members can also be tapped to teach and expand their expertise in research through trainings, conferences and seminar workshops within their area.

The Officers inducted to office in the 7th National Nursing Research Conference on November 30 to December 1, 2014 at the Century Park Hotel, Malate Manila with the theme "Knowledge Translation: Initializing and Embedding into Practice."

Representatives of the Vincentian Family and Lay Partners participated in the seminar workshop "National Systemic Change" spearheaded by the Systemic Change International Commission (SCIC) and the Office for Vincentian Identity and Mission of Adamson University held last July 7 to 15, 2014 at the Ozanam Bldg., Adamson University, San Marcelino St., Ermita , Manila.

The seminar-workshop provided an opportunity to all Vincentian Family and Lay Partners understand better notion, strategies, conceptual framework regarding Systemic Change Process and to develop different approaches for the persons who have direct contact with the people in the pastoral, rehabilitation, recovery, education ministries.
